Calling all Griffin Choristers!

Registration for our Varsity Choirs is now open for all choristers who plan to participate in the 2023-2024 school year! Registration, including payment, must be completed by Thursday, August 17th, 2023. Auditions will be held on August 18th after school in Rm. 137. An audition packet will be available starting August 7th Registered students will receive an audition packet via email (hard copies are available upon request). This year we are aiming to seat a varsity mixed choir – The Feather and Talon Chamber Choir –, “Arathel” Varsity Women’s Choir (open to soprano and alto voices), and “Anthropos” Varsity Men’s Choir (open to tenor and bass voices). Students will be able to specify their preference between these ensembles at their audition or may choose to sing in both the mixed choir and a men’s/women’s choir as dual participants; Priority will be given to filling positions on the varsity mixed group first. While the audition is primarily motivated toward an assessment of vocal ability and range characteristics, there are limitations to the number of voices we can accommodate within a given section. As such the top six voices in each section will be offered a spot in the mixed choir. Students whose range is flexible may be offered a position to fill out a needed voice part. Any students that do not make the mixed choir will be placed in the men’s or women’s choir according to their voice part. The link to register and make payment is at the bottom of the email.

Please note that all varsity choirs will meet for the duration of the school year and prepare repertoire for both the fall and spring seasons. There is not an option to participate in only one season. Additionally, students who are interested in choir and athletics are encouraged to participate in both. Our rehearsal schedule seeks to have as few conflicts with athletic practices as possible (there may be occasional conflicts with performances though these are few and far between). Choir Fees

Fees due in the fall semester are set at $350 for all high school varsity choir members; a continuing fee of $100 will be collected for the spring semester in January. Students who are members in two varsity choirs will not need to pay a second registration fee in the fall; (dual participants will be assessed one continuing fee per each choir they are a member of in the spring). Please note that these choirs have eight scheduled performances throughout the year which, among other things, includes a fall showcase performance at the Luella Bennack Music Center on the UIW campus, and travel to both Plano, TX for the North Texas Madrigal Festival, and to Houston in the spring to participate in the annual Excellence in Choral Artistry Festival. As such these fees are essential to provide for our budgetary needs.

Great Hearts Northern Oaks does not exclude any student from participation due to financial hardship. The school determines a family's eligibility for free and reduced choir fees through our Student Cost Waiver application, available in the school office. Eligibility for waived or reduced choir fees is determined according to the same standards as those found in the Free and Reduced Lunch application.
